How Avafina Makes a Difference

Avafina and Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY

At Avafina, we take pride in making our world a better place. One of the programs we have been working our organic coconut suppliers to improve the life of our farmers and the treatment of the soil.

The mission of the project:

  • Support soil health: assess the current soil health of coconut parcels and knowledge of farmers on the topic. As well, identify opportunities to enhance soil health and farmer motivation
  • Improve farmer livelihoods: assess safety and health of workers, farmers current income, market access, farmer premium distribution, diversification opportunities, and yield increase potential.
  • Enhance biodiversity: assess current on farm biodiversity and understand motivations for farmers to encourage or discourage on and off farm biodiversity.
  • Implement additional necessary activities: assess other activities that could address key issues and community needs.

PUR Project

During the Feasibility Assessment, discussions with farmers and farm visits highlighted the opportunity for agroforestry activities to support farmer food security, income diversification as well as biophysical benefits including carbon sequestration, soil health promotion and nutrient cycling.

PUR Project determined that there are opportunities to help support further agronomic training on regenerative agriculture, soil health and general parcel management topics. Through the study and conversations with IMC, the need to support kitchen renovation and tool replacement to meet farmers' and Simple Mills' goals were identified.

Farmers identified their keen interest in Dwarf Coconuts to help reduce time and energy spent on harvesting nectar. However, farmers have not interacted with dwarf coconuts to date, therefore, PUR Project believes that a dwarf coconut trial would be of high importance.
